AbstractErosion modeling in watersheds has benefited from the use of remote sensing data. Among these data, digital elevation models (DEM) have the potential to describe the influence of topography on erosion processes by the runoff flow. This article aims to analyze the applicability of SRTM and ASTER GDEM as a source of topographic information for estimating the two-dimensional topographic factor applied to erosion modeling in watersheds. This factor uses the characteristics of the flow of runoff to determine the erosive potential of the landforms. In order to analyze the influence of DEM in erosion modeling, we compared the results of the topographic factor calculated based on three different DEM: 1) generated by kriging of the SRTM data, 2) generated by kriging of ASTER GDEM data; and 3) generated by spline interpolation of 1:10,000 scale cartographic data. We conclude that DEM generated from SRTM and ASTER GDEM data allows us to estimate the two-dimensional topographic factor and identify areas susceptible to erosion in watersheds, similar to the DEM generated from cartographic data. Thus, the erosion potential due to topography can be established and evaluated based on a consistent method that can be applied for the entire Brazilian territory.
